Hello Doctor,
I'm currently dealing with an ear infection. About two months ago, I was prescribed a 7-day supply of cephalexin 500mg for a minor issue with my toe, which I ended up not needing. Recently, when I started experiencing symptoms of an ear infection, I began taking the leftover antibiotics. However, a couple of days later, during an unrelated checkup, my doctor prescribed a 10-day course of cefdinir 300mg specifically for the ear infection. I'm not entirely sure why I didn't inform them about the cephalexin I was already taking. Now, as I approach the end of the cephalexin course, my ear only feels marginally better. I'm uncertain whether I should discontinue the cephalexin mid-course. Should I proceed with the cefdinir for an additional 3 days to complete a 10-day regimen, or should I assess if the 7-day course of cephalexin was sufficient?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Upon reviewing your case, I recommend completing the full course of cephalexin 500mg as initially prescribed. It's important to ensure that you finish the entire dose to effectively address the infection. As for the cefdinir, I advise against starting it at this point. It's best to follow through with the cephalexin regimen and monitor your symptoms closely. If your ear infection persists or worsens despite completing the cephalexin course, I recommend consulting your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
Thanks
