Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Last year in July, I had a Mirena IUD coil. Now I don’t have any bleeding, but for ten to thirteen days I get dark brown discharge. After a week, the spotting starts again. Please tell me any solution to stop the spotting.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query:

Unfortunately, there are these side effects with hormonal IUDs – and they’re not rare. It’s comparable to the situation after using other hormonal contraceptives like the pill. What you call "dark brown discharge" may simply be the result of “missed” bleeding, just a few days later. Blood changes color from red to brown over time due to oxidation.

Time usually re-adjusts the situation to a normal status. However, interfering with the normal physical process of the monthly cycle comes with side effects. Most women accept this, while others are unaware that there’s always a relationship between cause and effect. Manipulating your body functions comes at a cost.

Thanks
