Hello Doctor,
I had unprotected sex over two months ago and got an HIV 4th generation lab test done on the 54th day, which came back negative. However, since then, I've been experiencing flu-like symptoms, including rashes, sore throat, and a low-grade fever for the past five days. I'm also noticing that my semen has turned yellow. I'm really worried and wondering if I might have HIV. Could the scabies medication the doctor prescribed earlier have affected my HIV test results? Or should I trust that I am truly negative? What should I do next?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. For a 4th generation HIV test, the window period (the time between potential HIV exposure and when the virus can be detected) is usually about two weeks. Therefore, if your test was negative at day 54, it is very likely to be a true negative result, assuming there have been no other recent risk exposures.
2. The scabies medication you were prescribed should not affect the results of your HIV test.
3. Regarding your current symptoms (flu-like symptoms, rashes, sore throat, fever, and yellow semen), these may be caused by something else. It's important to follow up with your doctor to assess your symptoms and rule out other possible causes.
4. If you're still concerned or experiencing ongoing symptoms, it's always a good idea to get further tests and consultations.
Thanks
