Hello Doctor,
I had an HIV test done on September 18, 2024, and the result came back negative. If I take another test on October 15, 2024, will the result likely be the same negative result? Just want to make sure.
Hello
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
If you have not had any additional risky exposures to HIV since your last test on September 18, 2024, and if there were no potential risks in the month leading up to that test, it’s very likely that your next HIV test on October 15, 2024, will yield the same negative result. HIV tests are generally reliable, and if you've remained at low risk, the results should be consistent.
However, it’s important to remember that HIV tests typically detect the virus a few weeks after exposure, so if you’ve had any new risks (such as unprotected sex, sharing needles, or other high-risk activities) since your last test, it’s best to wait a little longer or consult with your healthcare provider. In cases where there may have been recent exposure, retesting at the appropriate time will give you the most accurate result.
Thanks
