Hello Doctor,
I recently tested for HIV using a 4th Generation antibody/antigen test 30 days after my last exposure to my ex-partner, who has AIDS. The results came back negative. I’m concerned about the conclusivity of this test result. Is it reliable, and is there a possibility that the test could turn positive if I were infected? What should I do next?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
The 4th Generation antibody/antigen test is known for its reliability and can typically detect HIV infection within 2 to 3 weeks after exposure. Since you tested negative at 30 days, this is a promising sign; however, it’s essential to understand that testing at this stage may not capture all cases.
To ensure the most accurate results, I recommend that you undergo another test 6 to 8 weeks after your last exposure. This follow-up will provide a clearer picture of your HIV status. Additionally, if you have any symptoms or further concerns, please don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and support.
Thanks
