Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had a medical abortion on Monday, October 9th. Afterward, I bled for about 4 weeks and then it stopped. My period started on the 16th of this month and has lasted for almost 2 weeks now. Is this normal, or should I be concerned and see a doctor?

Hello, Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Not knowing the details of your pregnancy makes it difficult to give a precise answer. Generally, abortions within the first two months don't cause much harm to the uterus. Your prolonged bleeding suggests a later abortion, which could have been a severe procedure. The issue with subsequent bleeding is that it may affect the healing process, especially if it continues.

If the bleeding persists, it's essential to see the doctor who performed the abortion for a thorough follow-up and debriefing. This will ensure that any lingering issues are addressed promptly and that the healing process is not compromised. It's important to confirm that everything was removed properly during the abortion to prevent any complications.

Thanks
