Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Is it normal to experience continuous bleeding, lasting over a week, after the first intercourse? Although the bleeding is light with occasional clots and accompanied by mild pelvic pain that is not constant.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It is worth noting that some bleeding is normal after the first intercourse and may last for a day or two, typically in small amounts and accompanied by pelvic discomfort. However, in your case, if the bleeding has persisted for over a week along with mild pain, it would be advisable to seek an examination to check for possible tears or small wounds that may have occurred during the hymen perforation. If such an injury is found, the recommended management would involve abstaining from intercourse for a few days to allow the wound to heal, and potentially applying an antibiotic cream like Garamycin based on the examination findings. I hope this information addresses your concerns.

Thanks
