Hello Doctor,
Is hair falling with a white dot at the end normal?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Hair shedding is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. On average, we can lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. If you’re noticing a white bulb at the end of the hair strand, this usually represents the root of the hair, and it’s normal to see this when hair sheds naturally. However, if you’re experiencing excessive hair shedding, clumping, thinning, or bald spots, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment for evaluation. Conditions such as alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, or other scalp conditions can cause excessive hair loss and should be assessed by a dermatologist.
Additionally, if the white dot you’re referring to is not at the root but along the hair shaft, it could indicate a condition called white piedra, which is a fungal infection of the hair shaft. Please contact our office to arrange for a consultation if you’re concerned about excessive hair loss or changes in your hair or scalp.
