Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m an 18-year-old female experiencing hair thinning after a high fever 3-4 months ago, which I suspect is telogen effluvium. I’ve tried Klorane anti-hair loss shampoo and Naturvital tonics, but the hair loss returned. Recently, I applied onion juice to my scalp, and I've noticed increased hair fall since then. I'm worried, as I already have thin hair. How can I stop this hair loss and promote regrowth?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I'm sorry to hear about your concerns regarding your hair loss. As a dermatologist, I can provide some guidance regarding your situation. Firstly, it’s important to understand that hair loss can be a complex issue with many potential causes, including illness, stress, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, or even the use of certain hair products.

Telogen effluvium, which you mentioned, is indeed a common cause of hair loss following a high fever or severe illness. This condition usually resolves on its own within 6 to 9 months as your body recovers.

Regarding your use of various shampoos, tonics, and natural remedies, it’s crucial to remember that what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. Everyone’s hair and scalp are different, and what helps one person might cause issues for another. It’s possible that the onion juice may have irritated your scalp, leading to increased hair loss, so I recommend discontinuing its use.

For your ongoing hair loss, it would be best to consult with a dermatologist in person. They can examine your scalp, discuss your health history, and potentially order some tests to determine the exact cause of your hair loss. They may recommend treatments such as minoxidil or finasteride, which have been proven to help with hair loss in some cases.

In terms of regrowing your hair, there are treatments available, but their effectiveness can vary. These treatments include topical applications, oral medications, and even procedures like hair transplant surgery. However, it’s crucial to first identify the cause of your hair loss before deciding on a treatment plan.

In the meantime, maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle can support your overall hair health. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins in your diet, and try to manage stress through activities like exercise, meditation, or yoga.

Thanks
