Patient Question

Hello Doctor!

I’ve noticed a soft lump on my penis that has been there for a while, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. However, after masturbating recently, the area started itching a lot, which now has me worried. The itching is quite uncomfortable, and I’m not sure if this is something serious or just a minor issue. Could you help me understand what might be causing this lump and itching? Should I be concerned, or is it likely nothing major?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I’ll provide some helpful information regarding the lump on your penis and the itching you’re experiencing after masturbation.

A soft lump can result from several causes. One possibility is friction burn, which occurs from intense rubbing during masturbation, leading to swelling, redness, and tenderness. If the lump feels tender, it could be this.

Another cause could be Penile Mondor's Disease, a rare condition involving inflammation of the superficial veins after vigorous activity. It may appear as a cord-like swelling but usually resolves on its own with minimal care.

A lymphocele is also possible—this is a temporary lump caused by lymphatic blockage after sexual activity, which generally resolves without treatment.

Balanitis might be another reason. It’s inflammation of the glans, often due to irritation or infection, leading to itching, swelling, or redness. If you notice discharge, it’s essential to see a doctor.

If you've had unprotected sex recently, STIs could also cause lumps and itching.

I recommend avoiding masturbation or sexual activity until symptoms improve. Gentle cleaning and a mild moisturizer like aloe vera can soothe the area.

If symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop new ones like discharge or severe pain, consult a doctor. Early diagnosis can provide relief and prevent complications.

Thank you for reaching out, and I hope this helps. If you have further questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks.
