Patient Question

Hello Doctor!

I have a concerning issue I’d like to discuss. I recently noticed a lump on the shaft of my penis that appeared about 10 days ago. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but I’ve also been experiencing itching on my foreskin, which is quite uncomfortable.

I’ve been keeping the area clean and dry, but the lump and itching persist. I’m anxious about what this could mean for my health. Should I be worried and seek medical attention, or is this something that usually resolves on its own?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I understand that discovering a lump on your penis and experiencing itchiness can be distressing. It's important to address these symptoms, as they can arise from various causes, some of which may need medical attention.

A lump on the penis shaft, along with itching of the foreskin, can result from several conditions. One common cause is Balanitis, an inflammation of the head of the penis, often seen in uncircumcised males. Symptoms may include itchiness, redness, and sometimes discharge, particularly if there is inadequate hygiene or an infection.

Another possibility is a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) such as chlamydia or genital herpes, which can present with similar symptoms, including lumps and discharge, as well as pain during urination. If you've been sexually active recently, especially with new partners, consider this as a potential cause.

A Yeast Infection may also be a reason for your symptoms, particularly if you're uncircumcised. An overgrowth of Candida can cause itching and a white discharge resembling cottage cheese. Skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, or contact dermatitis from allergies to soaps or latex can also lead to irritation.

Given your symptoms, I strongly recommend consulting a healthcare provider as soon as possible for an accurate diagnosis. Maintaining good hygiene is essential: gently clean the area with warm water and mild soap, and avoid scented products that may irritate.

For temporary relief from itching, consider applying a cool compress or taking baking soda baths, which can soothe irritation. It's advisable to refrain from sexual activity until you've seen a healthcare provider to prevent further irritation or infection transmission.

While some causes may be benign and treatable, others might require medical intervention. Please seek medical attention to ensure you receive appropriate care. If you have any further concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thanks.
