Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I started eating chia seeds once a week from the beginning of January, but I think I may have overdone it. Around mid-March, I noticed my back started itching a lot. When I looked closely, I saw leopard-like spots appearing on the middle of my back. I’m worried about this and want to know how long it might take for these spots and the itching to go away. Is this something serious? What should I do next?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

The itching and leopard-like spots on your back are likely caused by a fungal infection, which is not related to eating chia seeds. You can try using an over-the-counter antifungal cream like clotrimazole or miconazole. Apply it twice daily for 2 to 4 weeks, even if the rash improves sooner. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid scratching, and wear loose clothing. If the spots don’t get better after two weeks, spread, or become painful, please see a doctor for further evaluation.

Thanks
