Hello Doctor,
My husband, 46, was recently diagnosed with heart failure grade II. After taking some antibiotics (clavulanic acid), he developed candidiasis. I understand the treatment is based on fluconazole, but due to his cardiac medications, I can’t give him that. He takes corlentor, carvedilol, plavix, diurex, sintrom, entresto, jardiance, and sortis. Could you please recommend some antifungals for him?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. In general, there are several classes of antifungal medications that can be used to treat candidiasis. If fluconazole is not suitable due to potential interactions with your husband's heart medications, other antifungal treatments might be considered.
2. For localized infections, topical antifungals such as clotrimazole or miconazole may be effective and have a lower risk of systemic interactions. If systemic treatment is necessary, alternatives like itraconazole or voriconazole can be considered, but these should be evaluated carefully for interactions with his heart medications.
3. It’s essential to consult with his cardiologist or a pharmacist to ensure any treatment plan is safe and effective. Close monitoring is crucial, especially with multiple medications involved.
Thanks
