Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My husband got burned pretty bad on his foot and shin. What is the best remedy for pain relief, can it be covered, and what with? He has to work the next 7 days or so and has to wear pants, how can he keep it from being injured while working? Best way to protect it.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Given the severity of the burn on your husband’s foot and shin, it’s important to assess the extent of the injury and provide proper treatment to prevent complications like infection, delayed healing, scarring, or mobility issues. The first step is to ensure the burn is cleaned and dressed properly. For pain relief, over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help, but always follow your doctor’s instructions. Topical ointments or burn creams like aloe vera gel can soothe the skin and reduce discomfort. The burn should be covered with a sterile, non-stick bandage to prevent infection. You can use a soft, breathable dressing like a sterile gauze pad, and be sure to change it regularly.

As for protection during work, since your husband will be wearing pants, ensure that the burned area is well protected by the bandage to avoid friction or further irritation. Tight or restrictive clothing should be avoided, and loose-fitting pants may be preferable. If possible, he could use a protective gauze or a specialized burn bandage that cushions and prevents further damage. Lastly, it’s important to keep the area elevated when possible to reduce swelling and promote healing. If the burn worsens or shows signs of infection, please seek medical attention immediately.

Thanks
