Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Yesterday, I was hit by a car while riding my bike and thrown about 2 meters. I didn't feel pain immediately, but hours later, I started experiencing severe foot pain and difficulty putting weight on my left foot. My family doctor suggested painkillers, but I feel the exam was superficial. I also have thrombophlebitis in both feet and am worried about blood clots. What should I do next?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. First and foremost, it is important to ensure that there is no fracture, so I recommend getting an X-ray done to rule that out. Pain following such an impact is common, but it's crucial to confirm there is no serious injury. If the X-ray confirms no fractures, you can manage the pain with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) like meloxicam or ibuprofen.

2. To help with support, consider using an ankle sleeve or a shoelace ankle support for the next two weeks. If you're still struggling to put weight on your foot, using crutches for a week can relieve pressure. Additionally, you can apply Voltaren gel (1% concentration) topically, three times a day, to reduce inflammation and pain.

3. Again, the most important step is to ensure there are no fractures before proceeding with the treatment plan mentioned above.

Thanks
