Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Recently, I underwent a deep tissue massage on April 2nd, followed by a flight on Thursday, April 4th. Since then, I've noticed considerable tightness and heavy bruising across my entire back. Additionally, my right leg has begun to ache. I'm concerned about the possibility of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and whether these symptoms could be indicative of such a condition. Could the bruises be related to DVT?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It's essential to address potential health issues promptly. If you're experiencing severe pain or discomfort, I strongly advise seeking medical attention without delay.

Following a deep tissue massage, it's common to experience various sensations as the body responds to the treatment. Such massages can release toxins and stimulate blood flow, contributing to overall well-being. However, it's crucial to monitor any unexpected symptoms closely.

The appearance of bruises following a massage is not unusual, as the manipulation of soft tissues can sometimes result in minor trauma to the blood vessels near the surface of the skin. These bruises typically heal on their own over time.

However, given the combination of symptoms you've described, including persistent bruising and the onset of leg pain, it's prudent to consider the possibility of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, often in the legs. While bruising alone is not a definitive indicator of DVT, it's essential to be aware of other associated symptoms, such as swelling, warmth, and tenderness in the affected area.

If you suspect DVT or are experiencing significant discomfort, I recommend seeking evaluation from a healthcare professional promptly. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing DVT and reducing the risk of complications.

Thanks
