Hello Doctor,
We think we have a case of shingles. Due to financial restrictions, we are currently trying to treat the symptoms at home. This includes Aleve, Airborne effervescent tablets to boost the immune system, and Vaseline or Neosporin applied to the clusters of blisters—along with frequent clothing changes, laundering potentially contaminated clothes in hot water, and many steps taken to avoid others in the house being afflicted (we have 2 kids that have never had chickenpox, only vaccinated). What else can we do outside of that?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
I understand your situation, and I appreciate your efforts to manage this case of shingles at home. While some symptoms can be managed at home, it’s important to seek professional medical advice for appropriate treatment. You’re already doing a great job with pain management and reducing the risk of spreading shingles. In addition, here are a few more recommendations:
- Cool Compresses: Applying cool, damp compresses on the blisters can soothe the skin and reduce pain.
- Calamine Lotion: This may provide relief from itching.
- Rest: Ensure the patient gets plenty of rest to support the immune system and aid recovery.
- Hydration: Keeping the patient well-hydrated helps with overall health and recovery.
- Reduce Stress: High levels of stress can worsen symptoms, so a calm, low-stress environment can help.
Please remember, shingles can be serious, especially if it spreads to sensitive areas like the eyes. If any complications arise—such as severe pain, fever, or changes in vision—seek medical attention promptly. Also, consider the shingles vaccine to reduce risks of recurrence and complications. For your children, you might discuss vaccination with their pediatrician when they are of appropriate age.
Thanks
