Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been experiencing severe tongue bleeding for the past two days. It’s incredibly painful, and I can’t eat or drink anything, not even hot or cold water. There are purple and red spots on my tongue and the roof of my mouth, and the pain level is at a 10. It’s so bad that I can’t speak correctly. I’ve already seen a dentist, and they’ve ruled out gum disease or any dental issues. What could this be, and how can I get relief?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Spontaneous bleeding from the tongue can be a serious condition that might indicate an underlying bleeding disorder. This could be related to issues with your platelets (the cells responsible for clotting) or clotting factors (proteins in the blood that help stop bleeding). It's essential to conduct blood tests, including a complete blood count (CBC), platelet count, and coagulation profile (e.g., PT, INR, aPTT), to identify the cause.

2. Additionally, spontaneous bleeding in the mouth, especially when associated with purple or red spots (which might indicate petechiae or purpura), could put you at risk of more severe complications, such as internal bleeding or even bleeding in the brain. This is why prompt medical attention is crucial.

3. I strongly urge you to visit your doctor or a hematologist immediately for further evaluation and treatment. In the meantime, try to avoid any activities or foods that could aggravate the bleeding, and if it worsens or you notice other symptoms like severe headache, confusion, or weakness, seek emergency care.

Thanks
