Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I think I have an anxiety disorder that gets triggered when I’m away from home. Whenever I’m not at home, I become extremely restless, I struggle with breathing, and I feel this overwhelming sense of danger, like I’m about to die. I went to boarding school twice, but both times I just couldn’t handle it. Now, I have to move to another continent for school, and I’m terrified. I really want to go, but the thought of it is making me feel so triggered and anxious. What should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It sounds like you're experiencing symptoms that are commonly associated with an anxiety disorder. The feelings of restlessness, difficulty breathing, and the sense of impending danger can be very distressing. These are typical signs of anxiety, and it's important to address them properly.

2. I strongly recommend consulting with a psychiatrist who can help diagnose your condition and work with you to create a treatment plan. In many cases, a combination of medication and therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can be very effective in managing anxiety. A psychiatrist can guide you through the process and help you develop coping strategies for situations like being away from home.

3. It's also important to remember that you're not alone in this—many people experience anxiety, and with the right support, it is possible to manage and reduce these symptoms.

Thanks
