Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder by my primary doctor, and they prescribed Xanax and Zoloft. However, I still experience panic attacks. Why is this happening?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It is very important to have a correct diagnosis. If you are experiencing symptoms that are intensified with this treatment, which is recommended for anxiety disorders, it is possible that you may have received a wrong diagnosis. It is not uncommon for symptoms to have similar characteristics in different disorders. What is more, the treatment of one disorder could potentially worsen another disorder. So, if you are not finding any relief from your symptoms, it may be necessary to consider the possibility of a wrong diagnosis. Sometimes, symptoms of Bipolar disorder can be mistaken for those of an Anxiety disorder. This is just an example.

Thanks
