Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been prescribed clonazepam for anxiety, and I sometimes take ibuprofen for headaches or muscle pain. Is it safe to take ibuprofen and clonazepam at the same time? Are there any risks or side effects I should be aware of if I combine them?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Ibuprofen and clonazepam are generally considered safe to take together as there are no significant interactions between these two medications. However, it’s always important to use both drugs as directed by your healthcare provider.

2. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain relief, while clonazepam is a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety or seizures. Taking these together should not cause any major issues, but in rare cases, some individuals might experience drowsiness or dizziness, as clonazepam can cause sedation.

3. If you have any underlying health conditions, such as kidney problems, or if you are taking other medications, it’s always a good idea to confirm with your doctor or pharmacist. Additionally, be sure to follow the recommended dosage for both medications.

4. If you notice any unusual symptoms after taking them together, please seek medical attention. Always prioritize safety when combining medications.

Thanks
