Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am 39 years old, and my schizophrenia is making my anxiety feel worse at this age. I am also very overweight and have other diseases. How can I do anything about this? My head feels like it’s in a fog with anxiety 24 hours a day, and I have sluggish movement along with pain from my weight. I also have serious metabolic disease. I think my brain is really imbalanced, and I have autoimmune issues, leaving me feeling hopeless. I get constant boils around my body every week for years, and some of these boils burst sometimes. I don’t think I’m infected by a virus or bacteria. I believe my autoimmune issues have worsened as I’ve aged.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Managing your situation can indeed be challenging, but there are several steps that may help alleviate some of your symptoms:

  1. Reach Out for Professional Help: If you haven’t already, it’s essential to speak with a psychiatrist or a mental health professional specializing in schizophrenia. They can assist in adjusting your treatment plan, which may include medication or therapy tailored to your needs.

  2. Regular Check-Ups: Ensure that you have regular appointments with a healthcare provider for your metabolic disease and autoimmune conditions. Proper management of these issues can enhance your overall health and possibly alleviate some of your anxiety.

  3. Therapeutic Support: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has proven effective in managing anxiety. This therapy can help you develop coping strategies that may be beneficial.

  4. Nutrition and Diet: A balanced diet can significantly impact your physical and mental well-being. Consulting with a nutritionist could help you formulate a dietary plan that supports your metabolic health.

  5. Gentle Exercise: Engaging in light physical activities, such as walking or stretching, can positively influence your mood and energy levels. Start with manageable goals and gradually increase your activity level as you feel comfortable.

  6. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can be effective in reducing anxiety. Many apps and online resources can guide you in these practices.

  7. Support Groups: Connecting with others who share similar experiences can foster a sense of community and understanding, which is incredibly valuable.

  8. Monitor Skin Issues: It’s important to consult a dermatologist about the boils. They can provide treatment options and investigate any underlying causes.

  9. Self-Care: Engage in activities that bring you joy or relaxation, no matter how small. Prioritizing self-care is vital for your well-being.

  10. Avoid Isolation: Stay connected with friends and family or consider joining community groups. Social support is crucial in managing mental health.

Remember, it’s important to take one step at a time and be kind to yourself throughout this process. You don’t have to navigate this alone—there are people and resources available to support you.

Thanks!
