Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

What can be the side effects of iodine administered for a CAT scan? I have a head CAT scan scheduled for Monday, and due to my allergies to quinolones (such as penicillin, Floxin, Cipro, amoxicillin, etc.), lactose, sulfur, and caffeine, as well as carrying an EpiPen, I am concerned about any potential adverse reactions or dangers associated with the iodine.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Iodine-based contrast material used in CAT scans is generally safe, but there can be some side effects, though they are not very common.

These can include mild nausea, itching, skin rashes, or more severe hypersensitivity reactions.

Given your history of allergies, it’s important to inform the medical team beforehand so they can take extra precautions, such as premedicating you with antihistamines or steroids, or monitoring you closely during the procedure.

If you’ve had any prior reactions to contrast materials, your doctor may opt for a different type of contrast agent.

It's also a good idea to carry your EpiPen, just in case, and ensure the medical staff is aware of your allergies before the scan.

Thanks
