Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had a medical abortion at 12 weeks, and the embryo sac passed, but the placenta and other pregnancy tissues are still inside me. It has been 8 days, and I have not had any bleeding. I took more doses of misoprostol, but they did not work. My cervix is only 1 cm dilated. Can cervix dilation exercises help in my case? Is there a chance the placenta could pass naturally if I wait 1–2 months? If I start bleeding later, will my cervix dilate enough for the placenta to come out? Why didn’t I bleed when the embryo passed? Will I bleed in the coming days?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

You need an ultrasound and examination to check for retained tissue. Waiting 1–2 months may lead to infection or complications. Since misoprostol didn’t work, natural expulsion is uncertain. Your cervix may not be open enough, and the placenta could be blocking bleeding. Surgical removal (D&C or MVA) may be needed. Seek urgent care if you develop fever, foul discharge, or heavy bleeding.

Thanks
