How to Treat Sunburn?

Medical Treatment:
  • Use aftersun cream or spray (such as aloe vera)
  • Cool your skin with a cool shower, bath or damp towel - take care not to get too cold for a baby or young child
  • Drink plenty of water to cool and avoid dehydration
  • Take painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes over sunburnt skin
  • Cover the sunburnt skin from direct sunlight until the skin has healed completely
  • Do not scratch or attempt to remove skin peeling
  • Avoid use petroleum jelly on sunburnt skin. Do not put ice packs on sunburnt skin
If your baby or young child has a sunburn, or your skin is blistered or swollen, or you feel hot and shivery, see your GP.
