How to Treat Benign Prostate Enlargement?

Medical Treatment:
  • Lifestyle changes. Drink less alcohol, caffeine, and fizzy drinks/pops. Drink less before you go to bed. Empty your bladder as and when. Empty again after going to the toilet. Antidepressants and decongestants make the bladder symptoms worse. Do bladder training. Pelvic floor exercises are good.
  • Medicines: Alpha blockers like alfuzosin or tamsulosin help to pass urine. For overactive bladder, anticholinergics. Enlarged prostate benefit from Finasteride or dutasteride.
  • Chronic retention is treated with a Bladder Catheter.
  • If worse despite all measures, then consider TURP(Transurethral resection of the prostate), Open prostatectomy, Prostate urethral lift implants, Cystoplasty(to increase the size of the bladder).
  • Newer minimally invasive, Prostate Artery Embolisation(PAE) shrinks the prostate size. Water ablation procedures(using water or steam to destroy tissue) also helps.
