Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Recently, I was admitted to the hospital for rapid heartbeat and irregular rhythm, but in the reports, high TSH levels were shown. I've been experiencing rapid heartbeat, weight loss, and bloating for the past two years. The doctor gave me Thyronorm 50, but still, after a week, my condition is the same. My heartbeat stays normal as long as I lie down, but sometimes it rises even when I’m lying down. My 2D echo and USG are normal. What should I do next?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Based on the symptoms you've described, it seems that you are dealing with hypothyroidism, which is a condition where the thyroid hormones are low in the body. As you mentioned, high TSH levels are a common indicator of this condition.

2. It's good news that your 2D echocardiogram came back normal, indicating that you don’t have any structural heart disease.

3. The treatment for hypothyroidism involves replacing the thyroid hormone that the body is lacking. Thyronorm is a medication used for this purpose, but it has a longer half-life.

4. This means that it can take several weeks to months before you see its full effect. A week is quite short to notice significant changes. In most cases, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the TSH levels to change and for symptoms to improve.

5. I hope you will feel better soon! Continue with your prescribed treatment, and I recommend following up with your doctor to monitor your progress.

Thanks
