Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I got my wisdom teeth removed about six hours ago, but one side is still bleeding a lot. I’ve tried biting down on gauze and even the tea bag trick, but nothing seems to stop it. Is this normal? Can I safely go to sleep, or should I do something else first?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Mild bleeding after wisdom tooth extraction is normal, but if it’s still heavy after six hours, bite firmly on fresh gauze for 30–45 minutes. A damp black tea bag can also help due to its natural tannins.

2. Avoid hot foods and drinks, and stick to cold, soft foods. If you’re in pain, you may take ibuprofen (Brufen 600 mg) with food.

3. If bleeding persists, contact your dentist. Rest with your head elevated and avoid spitting or using a straw to prevent dislodging the clot.

Thanks
