Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I believe I may have chlamydia and am considering using azithromycin to treat it. However, I am currently taking fluoxetine for depression. Is it safe to take azithromycin while on fluoxetine, or is there another medication that would be more appropriate?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Azithromycin can be used if you are sure that you have chlamydia. The usual dose is 500 mg once a day, taken before food for 5 days. There should be no issue with taking it alongside fluoxetine, but I recommend adjusting the timing of your fluoxetine to avoid any potential interactions. Please consult with your healthcare provider to confirm this treatment plan.

Thanks
