Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis (BV) and have been taking Metronidazole for 4 days. I had unprotected sex with my fiancé during this time. Does that mean I need to restart the medication, or will it still work if I continue taking it as prescribed?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is not considered a sexually transmitted infection, although sexual activity can sometimes trigger or worsen the condition. It's important to practice safe sex to reduce the risk of other sexually transmitted infections, including using condoms.

2. You can continue with your current treatment, and there is no need to restart the medication. However, it's best to avoid sexual intercourse during the course of treatment to allow the medication to work effectively.

Thanks
