Hello Doctor,
I'm concerned about my 30-month-old son, who experienced a gazing seizure about 6 months ago. His eyes were fixed on one side, and his body lost control. An EEG showed normal results, and we were advised to wait and watch. However, yesterday, he had a milder episode with just his eyes being stuck, and he remained responsive. Anti-epileptic medication has been started, and we're advised to do an MRI. Can you provide a second opinion on what this might be? Your guidance and help are much appreciated.
Thanks
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
I understand your concerns. Children's brains are in a dynamic phase of growth, which can sometimes manifest as unusual neurological symptoms like staring episodes, neck deviation, or sudden jerks. As a neurologist, it's crucial to gather more details and assess both brain structure and function through MRI and EEG to determine the next steps. Fortunately, in around 80% of cases, these symptoms resolve with age. Often, there's no specific cause other than the natural development of the brain (idiopathic seizures). I recommend following your doctor's advice and proceeding with the recommended tests. Hopefully, everything will turn out well with the grace of God.
Thanks
