Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've had Schistosomiasis for 20 years. Recently, the bacteria count decreases but rises when I drink water. How can I manage this? Also, how long does the bacteria stay in my body?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Schistosomiasis, also known as "bilharziasis," is caused by parasitic blood flukes. These parasites live in certain freshwater snails, contaminating the water with cercariae, their infectious form. Infection occurs when the skin comes in contact with contaminated water.

There are two types of schistosomiasis:

A. Acute schistosomiasis results in fever, diarrhea, and vomiting.

B. Chronic sequelae include periportal fibrosis, scarring in the liver.

Treatment varies for each type of schistosomiasis, and prevention involves avoiding exposure to freshwater.

Thanks
