Patient Question
Hello Doctor,
I have various hypertrophic scars on my body due to self-harm. They are large, puffy, and red and approximately 1.5 years old. They have only seemed to get worse, and I have tried every topical treatment. Any ideas on how to heal in a cheap fashion since I am a student about to start pharmacy school and will not have money for many years?

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Here are some ways to treat hypertrophic scars that are not expensive:
- Silicone sheets and gels: These can be found at most drugstores and are relatively affordable. They flatten and soften scars over time.
- Vitamin E oil: Apply a little vitamin E oil over the hypertrophic scar and massage gently. It helps to break down scar tissue and promote healthier skin.
- Aloe Vera: Apply fresh aloe vera gel to the scar twice daily and leave it on for about 20 minutes before washing it off. It has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties that can help reduce the appearance of scars.
- Onion extract: You can find onion extract creams or gels in drugstores. They can help reduce the appearance of scars over a few months.
- Massage: Massaging the scar with your fingertips in a circular motion before applying any scar treatment can help increase blood flow and break down scar tissue.
Thanks
