Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Can a catheter damage a penis if it is left in a patient for a month? I was in a coma after falling and landing head first on my left side. My penis is now only half as big when erect and bends downward. Could you please advise on the reasons for this occurrence?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

A catheter can cause damage to the penis if left in a patient for an extended period. Complications such as penile erosion can occur due to indwelling urinary catheterization, especially in cases of long-term use. Urethral injury from chronic catheterization can lead to complications like urethral erosion, which may require special vigilance, particularly in patients with spinal cord injuries. The risk of mechanical trauma to the urethra is increased in such cases, emphasizing the importance of proper catheter care and monitoring. In situations where a catheter has been in place for an extended period, there is a risk of urethral injury and other complications. It is crucial to follow medical advice from a urologist for additional insights and peace of mind. They may be able to offer further evaluation and recommend appropriate treatment options. Closely monitoring and seeking prompt attention if any concerning symptoms arise is essential.
