Why Does My Palate Feel Rough and Taste Bad After a Burn?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

About five months ago, I accidentally burned the roof of my mouth. After that, I noticed some white patches peeling off from the area. Since then, my hard palate feels very uncomfortable—it’s rough, almost like sandpaper, instead of smooth like it used to be. My sense of taste has also been affected and seems worse than before. I’m worried because the palate doesn’t feel soft or normal anymore. What could be causing this, and should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

Your symptoms may be due to several reasons related to the burn on your palate:

Scar tissue:Burns can cause the palate to heal with rough, thick scar tissue, which feels like sandpaper.

Keratosis:The tissue may become thickened and white as a protective response, causing roughness and taste changes.

Nerve impact:The burn might have affected nerves involved in taste, leading to altered sensation.

Chronic irritation or infection:If the area didn’t heal well, there could be ongoing inflammation or infection causing peeling and discomfort.

Please see a dentist or ENT specialist for an exam. They may check for scarring, infection, or other issues and possibly suggest a biopsy if needed. Meanwhile, keep your mouth clean, stay hydrated, and avoid irritants like spicy foods, alcohol, and smoking.

Thanks
