Hello Doctor,
Under my tongue, my saliva glands are swollen, tender, and they have white bumps on them. I’m not sure what it is and I’m starting to panic because I Googled it, and it says I have oral cancer.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query:
It’s natural to feel worried when experiencing symptoms and looking them up online, but not all causes are serious. Swollen and tender salivary glands with white bumps under the tongue can result from various factors, including salivary gland infections, which cause swelling, tenderness, and sometimes white spots or pus. Canker sores, painful ulcers inside the mouth, and oral thrush, a yeast infection leading to white patches, are also possibilities. Additionally, salivary stones, which are small calcified deposits, can block the glands, causing pain and swelling. Trauma from biting the tongue or irritation from dental appliances can also lead to these symptoms, as can allergic reactions to foods, medications, or oral care products. While it’s less common, serious conditions like oral cancer can present similarly, though they are often accompanied by persistent sores, lumps, difficulty swallowing, or changes in voice.
To determine the exact cause and get proper treatment, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional, such as a dentist or doctor, for a thorough evaluation. In the meantime, maintain good oral hygiene, avoid irritating foods and beverages, and refrain from poking or touching the affected area.
