Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My nails have become pale, with the top tips turning pink. I’m 19 years old, perfectly healthy, athletic, and I train six times a week. I eat healthy, so I’m concerned about what could be causing this. I’ve read online that it could be related to liver problems, but I highly doubt that. Can you help explain this?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Changes in nail color can sometimes indicate underlying health conditions, but they can also be completely benign. Pale nails can occasionally be a sign of anemia, a condition where the body lacks sufficient red blood cells. However, anemia is usually accompanied by other symptoms like fatigue and weakness. Given your active and healthy lifestyle, this seems less likely.

The pink at the top of your nails is probably the nail bed showing through, which is normal and typically not a cause for concern. While liver disease can cause white nails, it usually comes with additional symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and changes in bowel movements. Based on your age and overall health, it’s unlikely this is the cause.

I recommend keeping an eye on any other changes or symptoms. If you're still concerned, it would be best to schedule an appointment for a closer examination and possible tests to put your mind at ease.

Thanks
