Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently had a blood test, and my SGPT (ALT) and SGOT (AST) levels came back elevated. I'm really concerned about what this means for my liver health. I don’t drink alcohol regularly, and I try to eat a balanced diet, but I do take some medications for other health conditions. What could be causing these high levels, and what steps can I take to bring them back to normal? Are there any lifestyle changes, supplements, or treatments that can help lower them effectively?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Elevated SGPT (ALT) and SGOT (AST) levels may be due to fatty liver (Grade 1-2), excess weight, diet, alcohol, or medications. A full evaluation, including weight, diet, and medical history, is needed.

To lower levels:

1. Maintain a healthy weight

2. Eat a liver-friendly diet (less sugar, processed food)

3. Exercise regularly

4. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol

Thanks
