Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have a knee wound from when I stumbled. Can you tell me what type of ointment I should use? The wound is still red.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

For treating knee wounds, an ointment like Fucidin or Bactroban can be effective. The main ingredient in Fucidin, fusidic acid, is an antibiotic that targets common bacteria in wound infections, like staphylococci and streptococci. Fucidin penetrates well into the skin—even through scabs—and should be applied thinly 1-2 times daily. It’s best to continue using Fucidin for a week to prevent antibiotic-resistant bacteria from developing.

Bactroban is another top choice, particularly in the early stages of wound care. Like Fucidin, Bactroban fights the bacteria commonly found on the skin, helping to prevent infections if applied early. Apply it in small amounts 2-3 times daily and use for about 10 days to avoid resistance, although you may stop sooner if the wound heals quickly. Remember, Bactroban can be contaminated easily, so try to finish or discard an opened tube quickly.

Thanks
