Hello Doctor,
I'm a 21-year-old with a work history of around three to four years. Sadly, I suffer from recurring kidney stones. They cause intense pain, severe nausea, and sometimes leave me unable to even get up from the floor. Moving too much makes it worse and can even lead to internal bleeding. This health issue has made it hard for me to find a job, as employers worry I won't be able to work effectively. Can I get social security benefits?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Yes, you may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. To be eligible, you need a work history that shows you've paid Social Security taxes. With your work history of about three to four years, you might have paid enough into the system to qualify. But the Social Security Administration (SSA) will also look at your medical condition to see if it meets their disability criteria. In your case, recurring kidney stones could be seen as a disabling condition if they stop you from working any job, even sedentary ones. SSA offers two types of disability benefits: SSDI and Supplementary Security Income (SSI). SSDI depends on your work history, while SSI is for people with very limited income and resources.
Thanks
