Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have been experiencing acne issues both before and after menstruation. Is this truly a hormonal matter? Should I consult a doctor for further guidance?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Yes, acne can indeed be a hormonal issue. Hormones, specifically androgens, have the potential to increase sebum production, an oily substance that can clog pores and result in acne. Androgens also make the skin more prone to inflammation, further contributing to acne development. While acne is commonly associated with puberty due to hormonal fluctuations, it can also affect adults, particularly women. Hormonal changes, such as those occurring during menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, and conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can trigger acne breakouts. PCOS, in addition to acne, can manifest symptoms like irregular periods, infertility, and weight gain.

Thanks
