Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm concerned about my son's elevated levels of bad cholesterol. I'm considering Atorvastatin 10 or 20 to help manage his cholesterol. He's in good physical shape, having recently moved from the UK to the US. Given his active lifestyle, what would be the best medication for him? He's also started exercising at a nearby gym.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Implementing lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise and dietary adjustments, including a focus on reducing fat in cooking and avoiding junk foods, can positively impact cholesterol levels.

2. While lifestyle changes are beneficial, their impact on controlling bad cholesterol is somewhat limited.

3. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to assess the specific risk factors affecting your son. A doctor can determine the appropriate target level for reducing bad cholesterol and prescribe medications if necessary. The dosage of any prescribed medication will be tailored to the degree of reduction required based on individual health considerations.

Thanks
