Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m 14 years old, and 2 days ago, I took 10 tablets of acetaminophen codeine. After taking them, I felt a little sick, but I slept it off. The next day, I had severe nausea and vomiting. After about 15 hours, I started feeling better, but I’m still worried about possible side effects. Will any bad effects show up in the next few days, or am I in the clear?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It’s very important to be cautious with acetaminophen, as it can be harmful to the liver, especially in high doses. Acetaminophen is known to be hepatotoxic, meaning it can cause damage to the liver, which is why it’s crucial to monitor its effects on your body.

2. I strongly recommend that you visit a healthcare professional as soon as possible to get your liver function tested. Tests like SGPT, SGOT, and prothrombin time (PT) will help assess your liver’s health and whether any damage has occurred.

3. In the future, please avoid using any medication without consulting a doctor first to ensure you're taking the correct, safe dose based on your health needs.

Thanks
