I Swallowed a Boric Acid Suppository by Mistake – Should I Be Worried?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Yesterday, I accidentally swallowed a boric acid vaginal suppository instead of inserting it. I panicked but remembered that I had done this once or twice about a year ago with no symptoms. I called poison control, and they told me I should be fine, but I’m still feeling a bit anxious. Should I be worried about any delayed effects or do anything else to be safe?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

If you are not experiencing any symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or dizziness, there is nothing to worry about. Boric acid in small amounts is generally not harmful when accidentally ingested, especially if poison control has already reassured you. Just stay hydrated and monitor yourself for any delayed symptoms. If you notice anything unusual, seek medical attention.

Thanks
