Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Is pure almond extract classified as a food allergen? As a cake and cookie designer, I am creating allergen content labels for my vanilla almond cookies. I use pure almond extract. Should I include it as a potential allergen?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Almonds, along with walnuts, hazelnuts, and cashews, are recognized as significant triggers of tree nut allergies in both children and adults. Recent survey data from the United States reveals that almond and cashew allergies have a prevalence rate of 0.7% each, making them the most frequently reported tree nut allergies among both children and adults.

Thanks
