Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My age is 19 years and 2 months, but I still don't have a beard or moustache on my face. Could I use minoxidil or a derma roller for it? If yes, which one should I use? Is this the right age to be concerned about it?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I understand your concern about your facial hair growth, and it's completely normal to have questions about this. It's important to know that the onset and rate of facial hair growth can vary significantly among individuals. This variation is often influenced by genetics and hormones, which means some people may start growing facial hair later than others.

Minoxidil is a medication that is commonly used to treat hair loss on the scalp. Some people use it off-label to encourage the growth of facial hair. However, it's crucial to remember that minoxidil is a medication and can have side effects, including skin irritation and, in rare cases, unwanted hair growth in areas other than the face. Therefore, using minoxidil should only be done under the guidance of a healthcare provider to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.

Derma rolling, on the other hand, involves using a small device covered in tiny needles to roll over the skin. This process is believed by some to stimulate collagen production and increase blood flow to the hair follicles, potentially encouraging hair growth. However, the effectiveness of derma rolling for promoting facial hair growth is not well established, and there can be risks such as skin irritation and infection.

At your age, it is quite common to still be developing facial hair. Many young men do not achieve full beard and moustache growth until their early to mid-20s. There is a good chance that your facial hair will continue to grow and become fuller with time.

If you are concerned about your lack of facial hair and are considering treatments like minoxidil or derma rolling, I strongly recommend consulting with a healthcare provider or dermatologist first. They can evaluate your specific situation and provide you with safe and effective options based on your individual needs and circumstances.

Remember, everyone develops at their own pace, and there is no "right" time to have a beard or moustache. It is more important to focus on your overall health and well-being. Embracing your unique development is crucial, and a healthcare provider can help guide you through any concerns you might have.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns. I'm here to help and support you.

Thanks
