Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had a cold, which has already reduced, but last week, suddenly my left ear became blocked, similar to what happens during air travel. I thought it might be due to pressure differences, as it occurred previously when I was using an elevator. However, the condition persists, and I am still unable to hear clearly in my left ear.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

There is a slight possibility that you may have a serious condition. Visit an ENT doctor to have your ears examined and to rule out the most common causes. If there is no wax buildup or eustachian tube dysfunction, proceed with a hearing test. If the test reveals significant hearing loss, it is advisable to begin steroid treatment to preserve your nerve. Since it's been a while and the condition hasn't improved, it's essential to seek medical attention. A doctor can examine your ear to determine the extent of the issue and recommend appropriate treatment. In some cases, they may suggest techniques like yawning, swallowing, or the Valsalva maneuver to equalize the pressure in your ears. They might also prescribe medication or other interventions depending on the severity of the condition. Avoid trying to forcibly clear your ear on your own, as this could potentially worsen the situation. It's best to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment.

Thanks
