Patient Question

Hello Doctor

My child was bitten by a dog. Although the skin wasn't broken, there's a bruise. The doctor applied antiseptic spray. Should we still go to the hospital since my child isn't vaccinated for rabies?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Possibilities:

1. Rabies Risk: Although the skin remains intact, a dog bite carries a risk of rabies transmission, especially if the dog's vaccination status is unknown.

2. Bruising: The presence of a bruise suggests tissue damage, which may require medical attention to assess for any underlying injuries or infections.

Recommendations:

1. Rabies Vaccination: It's crucial to prioritize your child's safety. Healthcare professionals certainly recommend that he receives the rabies vaccination promptly to prevent potential infection.

2. Rabies Immunoglobulin: Even if bleeding is minimal, rabies immunoglobulin may be necessary as a precautionary measure to counteract the risk of rabies transmission.

3. Seek Medical Guidance: Given the circumstances, seeking medical guidance is highly advisable. A healthcare professional can provide a thorough evaluation, administer appropriate treatments, and offer guidance on further care.

Thanks
