Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I was on the Depo shot until December 3rd. About a week later, my period started and lasted for several weeks, but it finally stopped about a week ago. During that time, my boyfriend and I had sex while I was still on my period, and after it stopped, we had sex four more times, and he ejaculated inside me each time. Now, I’m wondering—could I be pregnant? If not, what could be the reason my period suddenly stopped?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. There is a possibility of pregnancy, especially since unprotected intercourse occurred multiple times after your period stopped. However, another likely reason for the change in your cycle could be a hormonal imbalance, which is common after stopping Depo. The shot can affect your menstrual cycle for months, sometimes causing irregular bleeding or even missed periods.

2. To determine the cause, I recommend taking a pregnancy test first. If negative, a hormonal evaluation, including blood tests and possibly an ultrasound, can help assess if your body is still adjusting post-Depo or if there’s another underlying issue. A consultation with a doctor will provide clarity and guide you on the next steps.

Thanks
