Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been experiencing jaw locking lately, and it sometimes gets stuck when I try to open or close my mouth. Is there anything I can do at home to relieve or get rid of this jaw lock without needing to see a doctor right away?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

1. Jaw locking can be uncomfortable, and there are some steps you can try at home to help relieve the symptoms. Using a muscle relaxant like Relaxon may help ease the muscle tightness around your jaw. Additionally, taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Cataflam can reduce inflammation and pain. Applying a warm compress or gentle warm massage to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area can also relax the muscles and improve jaw movement.

2. However, it’s important to use these medications as directed and consult with a healthcare professional if the locking persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms like severe pain, swelling, or difficulty eating. Persistent jaw locking may require further evaluation to rule out underlying conditions.

Thanks
